Mark (BA LLB Hons, University of Melbourne) leads the specialist employment law team at MDC Legal. He has over 17 years practice in industrial, workplace and employment law. In previous lives he was Associate to Chief Justice David Malcolm, worked in a commercial litigation firm, then as a senior associate of a national firm, and as Principal Solicitor of the Employment Law Centre. Mark is a well-regarded practitioner in workplace relations law, named as a “leading lawyer” in Doyle’s Guide 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017. In addition to providing strategic and front end advice and implementing contracts policies and procedures, Mark has conducted litigation and acted as counsel in several jurisdictions on “both sides of the fence” in a wide variety of matters, including injunctions and restraint of trade matters, protected industrial action, contractual claims, general protections and unfair dismissal claims, and bullying and discrimination claims.

Nikita Barsby

Nikita (BA LLB, Murdoch University) is a Senior Associate at MDC Legal, with almost a decade’s experience in workplace and employment law. She is recognised as a recommended employment lawyer in Doyle’s Guide to the Legal Profession, 2018. Nikita has worked with Corrs Chambers Westgarth and Lynn & Brown Lawyers, prior to joining MDC Legal. Nikita has advocacy and negotiation experience in the Federal Court of Australia, the Federal Circuit Court of Australia, the Magistrates, District and Supreme Courts of Western Australia, in the Fair Work Commission and in the Western Australian Industrial Relations Commission. She advises employees and employers on all aspects of State and Federal workplace laws, including unfair dismissals and general protections matters, contractual and statutory rights and obligations, the drafting and interpretation of employment contracts, redundancies, performance management and termination and discrimination. Joanna Knoth

Joanna Knoth (BA LLB, University of Western Australia) is a Senior Associate at MDC Legal. Joanna has a Bachelor of Laws and a Bachelor of Arts, majoring in Industrial Relations, for the University of Western Australia in 2008. Joanna has a strong employment law background, which includes experience in unfair dismissal and adverse action matters, industrial strategy and dispute contingency, enterprise agreement making, restructuring and redundancy, post-employment restraints, workplace investigations, equal opportunity and discrimination. In addition to commercial work, Joanna has represented employers in a variety of forums, including in the Federal Court, the Federal Circuit Court, the Fair Work Commission and the WAIRC.

Renae Harg

Prior to commencing with MDC Legal, Renae worked at a global law firm and boutique WA employment law firm. Renae has a broad range of experience in providing employment and workplace relations advice and has acted for individuals as well as small, medium and global employers. Gemma Little

Gemma (BA/LLB Hons, University of Western Australia) is a Lawyer at MDC Legal. Gemma completed a Bachelor of Laws with Honours and a Bachelor of Arts majoring in Psychology at the University of Western Australia in 2015. Gemma has worked in employment law since 2013, first as a paralegal and then as a lawyer. She has a broad range of experience in providing advice and assistance to both employees and employers. Gemma’s experience includes assisting in statutory and contractual-based claims; drafting employment contracts and workplace policies; and providing legal and strategic advice on employee and employer rights and obligations, transfer of businesses, workplace investigations, disciplinary action, restructuring and redundancy and post-employment restraints.

Madeleine Brown

Prior to joining MDC, Madeleine had a varied professional background, which included working as a paralegal in private practice, volunteering in the community sector and most recently as a lawyer at a peak employer union. Lauren Wright

Lauren (BA, University of Western Australia) is a Law Clerk at MDC Legal. Lauren is a final year Juris Doctor student at the University of Western Australia. Lauren has worked in employment law since 2017, beginning as a paralegal for the Employment Law Centre to advise vulnerable Western Australian employees under solicitor supervision. In that role, Lauren has drafted and delivered practical and concise advice to clients on their potential statutory and contractual-based claims. Since joining MDC Legal, Lauren has gained experience in legal research; drafting letters of demand and court documents; corresponding with clients and assisted our solicitors in acting for and advising employee and employer clients. Previously, Lauren has volunteered at the Domestic Violence Legal Clinic and Law Access. Lauren will be joining MDC Legal as a Law Graduate in November 2018 at the completion of her degree.
